the lullaby of paddra-lo nero
Who: Yeul, Nero & Caius Ballad
When: BF 609-600 or so.
Where: The Metropolis of Paddra, inside of the Castle building.
Summary: Yeul meets Caius for the first time, Nero dies and they are left with a lot of rituals and new issues.
The effortless sound coming from the crowd below the balcony of the castle of Paddra was all she wished to hear. On this day, she refused counsel of those of the Order that would try to have her handle other ordeals. Today was the day that she would be ripped away from her beloved guardian; Nero. She knew in his advanced age that it was only a matter of time, the new guardianship belonging to the violet-haired man would come upon Pulse today.
She knew that this new ownership meant many things would happen today, so she needed to be ready for it. Yeul shifted in her chair that hid her partially from the outsiders that hoped the see the Seeress at her perch several stories from the square. The silver-haired maiden heard a loud knocking at the door to her bedroom and she perked her ears a little; it was definitely Nero. Pressing her hands against the sides of the chair, she pushed herself up, smoothed her hair down and walked to the door. The golden handle was pulled down with a subtle ‘click’ and she opened it enough just to see who it was.
Of course, it was Nero.
She held herself exceptionally well considering what she knew, it took someone with incredible observation skills to see her subtle emotions. Yeul would have to be on her guard today, especially within the next few hours as they were the last in Nero’s long life. The man was incredibly special to her, he did not just cover the boundaries of fatherly love, but it included a type of love that only she could expect to feel for someone she would lose. Like most days, she greeted him with her slightest of smiles and the gentlest of curvatures of her eyebrows but today was different. Yeul greeted him with her arms wrapped around his firm waist, tightening a very little as if he would just disappear from existence in the wind.
Nero, shocked by Yeul’s behaviour, sought to comfort whatever ailed her with a large and gentle pat on the head. “Little Queen, did you miss me so? You know my quarters whereabouts and to disturb me even if I am asleep, yes?” Nero spoke plainly, a nostalgic smile placed on his tan visage. Nero was Paddra’s Hero, the Guardian of the Jewel to the Farseers and looked every bit the part -- although his disposition has regressed due to his age. The man stood six foot five, a solid two-hundred and six pounds of muscle with mid-length onyx hair that took no shine from the sun and sun-kissed skin from many days sought. Now that he was nearing the age of sixty-five, he was skin well-creased on his face from many expressions over the years but Yeul knew that he must have lived a enjoyed life to have as many as he had.
“Yes, I do know the location but I wish only for your companionship on this day of days. I suppose, I did wish to have a conversation about a time before myself.” Yeul said as she released his waist, took his hand and lead to him to the balcony where the two could be seen together overlooking the square. Yeul was happy that this moment was allowed to happen, even more so that she could speak with him before his passing.
“Ah, Yeul. My old heart has always been open to you and any question will be fully answered, if I know it.” Nero said. Yeul tilted her head in his direction, squinting one eye due to the direct sunlight hitting her face. “Do you ever wish that you could have had a family of your own? Do you wish that you had someone who could love you as I cannot?” Yeul said something that could be construed as cruel in words but she did not have the ability of wordly kindness sometimes. Nero could only shake his head of inky-soaked hair and shrug with heavy shoulders.
“Yeul, I was very young when I become guardian and I loved the first Yeul I guarded. I cannot express the feelings of a man who must watch several of the loves he had die. They were all Yeul, like you, but then they were not all you, do you understand? My Yeul was not easily found, her visions came very late and many of people in her original tribe were frightened of her. Taking her away from those people was like rescuing the princess from those books you read. I had fifteen years with her, even though I was only thirteen myself when I became guardian. I believe that I only beat Hawke because I was so young and he was much older than I am now.” He laughed to himself. Yeul never knew Hawke but she knew of him from memories of previous Yeuls and the diaries they often kept.
“I am sorry, I wish I could have released you to keep you from that torment.” Yeul’s guilt was displayed on her face this time, it was her only emotion that she generally emoted at all. Yeul laced her fingers with Nero and looked down to see if the violet-haired youth was anywhere in the crowd but she saw nothing. Nero furrowed his brow, seemingly suspicious about Yeul’s actions as she often acted this way when she had a unpleasant vision.
“Yeul, do not fret yourself about the life of a man who chose his position. I might have only loved one Yeul but I cared for three others, excluding you. In the days of prosperity and longevity, I am happy to still have this privilege even now. Are you worrying about what happens when I can no longer protect you?” Nero said the hard words that both of them did not want to say out loud. Yeul no longer could face him, she could no longer say anything due to how she felt about knowing his demise. Nero hated the distance that she often projected when she was upset, so he bent down on one knee and moved her face in his direction.
“Yeul, there will be a successor and that person will be different but he or she will take my place eventually. Do not be so sad about it, I have been ready for a successor for many years now.” Nero said plainly. Yeul was easily upset by emotional words and he sought to use very simple ones to keep her mood from deteriorating throughout the day. “Now, let us go do something else as the day is still young!” He grinned, even boyishly for an old man. Yeul did not reply directly, she only leaned forward and wrapped her arms around his neck and held on tightly to truly remember this moment.

Nero had nearly fifty years battle-ready experience and it would be unfair to take the first swing. As he swung his blade across, Nero crossed his blade along the top of Caius' to keep the sword from thrusting into him. Nero spun with this move to get behind Caius and attempt to use the back of his swords and shove Caius forward to watch him, hopefully, lose his footing. If he had, Nero would take no time to use the momentum to try to strike him in the side. Although, if he had not lost his footing and remained stable after the hard shove, Nero would take a few quick paces back.
Inky black strands fell into Nero's face, not shielding his face or covering it but just getting loose from the movements. Caius should be so lucky that it was considered forbidden to use powers of the L'cie to take the possible successors.
Yeul on the other hand did not enjoy this battle, she kept from the fight as she heard the swords cross and her disposition had furthered into disdain. Her heart pounded as feverishly as it could in her chest from the on-coming fear that would take Nero from her, especially after she just affirmed her feelings for him as distant as she possibly could. The silver-haired maiden pressed her hands against her cheeks, then slowly covered her eyes and remembered that she was in the public eye.
To show weakness is to allow them to know fear.
Yeul revealed her face to not only Caius but to Nero as well. She would now watch as emotionally disconnected as she could.
Caius Ballad
The first strike had been made. If it were to be blocked, Caius would then attempt to clash at the other male's swords. If it were to make a hit, then Caius would stop in his foot steps, and attempt to strike once more. It the attack were to be dodged, then the edge of the sword would hit the ground, causing the amethyst haired male to lift the sword off of the ground. Glancing at the older male, he took a deep breath, though it was more of a heavy breath. It was true though. Caius did seem to be much quicker than the other male, despite their long age gap. Not looking at Yeul at the moment, he started to attempt to slash at the other male again.
Caius had known that the battle of the guardians was no easy task at all, though he was risking his life to do so. Heaving a heavy sigh, he was trying to breathe, though he felt as if this wasn't the time to be resting right in the middle of the battle. If he were to do so, then it would fully break his concentration; and possibly get himself killed. Aiming his sword towards the other male's neck, he gazed at him with his amethyst eyes though it was more of a glare.
Re: Caius Ballad
Using short swords meant that he could use his body as well as weapons for fighting, unlike carrying a single heavy sword. Nero did a spin, his swords moving with him and made an attempt to ward off the first attack by attempting to slice the inside of his bicep. If he missed, a large shoulder tackle his his abdomen was made to shove him onto the ground. Something appeared to be strange as Nero did not chase after him to kill him, instead kept allowing him to come at him even though he appeared to be out-matched. Nero, did not say it, but he was ready to die and he wanted Caius to land an accurate single blow. Yes, he was going to give him the honor of guardianship but not without the work to do so.
If anything, this appeared to be more of a test to concern whether or not Caius would be ready to handle foes with much more battle experience. That's what this dance was all about.
Caius Ballad
Noticing the other male doing a spin, his sword felt as if it was being blocked off from the attack he had done earlier. He attempted to back away, as if attempting to dodge the attack, though a little cut from the other male's sword on his biceps. He then attempted to push his shoulder against the other male's abdomen, and made an attempt to push the other male on the ground. Caius wasn't about to give up on the battle to become Yeul's next guardian. The amethyst haired male didn't really know much about wanting to die. He was just about ready to kill the other male.
Keeping an emotionless and serious look on his face at the moment, he started to pull his arm back at the moment, though seeing the other male on the ground at the moment. He then started to run towards the other male, pulling his arm back that was holding the large sword, before then starting to swing towards the other male. If it missed, then Caius would have taken a knee down to the ground, though he would attempt to stand up, as if he was one of those people that wouldn't back down from a fight. If it were to hit, then Caius would swing towards the other male, attempting to slash at his chest.

In that moment, his eyes shifted to Yeul and his muttered something inaudible for her. The two were so close that she would already know the words even without sound escaping them. Yeul placed her hands over her face, covered her mouth and nose as she tried to resist the urge of emotions coming from her. She was not allowed to intervene and to merely watch this display was devastating to her in every capacity.
Nero, after a moment, gained his balance and took several paces back. Again, he did not move to strike first. Nero would continue to allow Caius to approach him, he stood there with a ragged breath and excessively bleeding.
Caius Ballad
As Caius, kept his amethyst eyes focused on the older male, Nero, he had started to approach him, with an emotionless look on his face at the moment. He heaved a breath of slight exhaustion, though he wasn't going to back down at all. He saw him gaining his balance and taking several paces back. He had also noticed that he was breathing raggedly and that he was bleeding excessively. He had held his arm back, that was holding his sword, knowing that he was about to make the final blow.
"Any last words, Nero?" Caius asked him, as if getting ready to stab the older male in the chest; well at least attempt to. If he were to successfully stab the older male in the chest where the bleeding wound was, then he would have successfully killed him, and that the battle of the guardians had ended. If he ended up missing, then he would be on his knee, as the sword would stab into the ground, causing the amethyst haired male to heave some sighs before then attempting to get back up and glanced over towards the other male.

Nero's own balance wavered back and forth as he could only breath heavily, but Caius' motion for last words made him turned towards the simple youth and wordlessly mouth the meaningful I love you for her eyes alone. Nero turned his face towards Caius and before he knew it, the sword was successfully rushed right through him and he was completely dead the moment he was impaled. Nero's form fell limp against the ground, and that was the end of his life. Yeul, on the other hand, could not withhold her emotions and she suddenly softened before the small woman rushed to Nero's fallen body and she could only lift his head as the rest of him was too heavy.
Yeul was merely eighteen and barely experienced death of any type, but she now lost the only pillar in her life. Unable to hold back her tears, she cradled his head even with the blood that soaked his clothing and her own. The scene alone was difficult for others to see, but none of them had the attachments that Yeul did and as she set there her right hand untied a simple necklace he wore and held it in her hand. Due to the vulnerable scene of Yeul's unbound strings, it did not take long for clergy men to arrive and begin to regulate the crowd.
"Queen Yeul, please come with me, you have no need to hold onto the body of a fallen guardian." One said to her, as if to push her from her mourning process.
Yeul chose not to respond, she could not even look at Caius -- who bested him.
